In this encore edition of HoCoPoLitSo’s The Writing Life poet Roland Flint speaks and laughs Lucille Clifton, his longtime friend, former Maryland Poet Laureate and winner of the coveted 2007 Ruth Lilly Poetry Foundation Prize. As they chat, Ms. Clifton reads ten poems from “forgiving my father” to “what the mirror said” and “lucy one eye.”
AUGUST 2008 – Carrie Brown hosted by Ron Charles (Encore 2007)
Novelist Carrie Brown, author of Rose’s Garden, Lamb in Love and, The Rope Walk, joins host Ron Charles, fiction editor of the Washington Post Book World in this encore edition of HoCoPoLitSo’s The Writing Life. Charles and Brown discuss the act of writing (like falling off a cliff, Brown says), how her traveling as a child affects her work and “the pleasure of recognition” she hopes to foster. Brown reads the opening of The Rope Walk, her coming-of-age novel about a young Vermont girl; it’s the golden morning of her 10th birthday party. But fear comes into the girl’s life, in varied forms. Brown remembers asking herself, while writing, “What is it like for a child to grow up in a world that feels perilous?”

In this encore edition of HoCoPoLitSo’s The Writing Life, host, poet, and writer E. Ethelbert Miller engages award-winning performance poet and memoirist David Mura in a fascinating conversation about the stories, silences, research, and imaginative work that comprise his writing life. Mura reflects on the family legacies of Japanese internment, relocations, and assimilation that influence his double racial identity and consciousness, as well as the influences of photography, jazz, travel, and education on his writing and performance. He reads from and references his poetry, "Relocations," "The Colors of Desire" and "Minneapolis Public," and nonfiction, Song for Uncle Tom, Tonto and Mr. Moto, Where the Body Meets Memory, and Turning Japanese.
